- Its a 32-bit decimal no. divided into four parts each of 8-bits between 1 - 255.
- It is divided into four classes:
- Class A : 0.0.0.0 - 126.255.255.255 => 8-bits - Net Id and 24-bits - Host Id.
- Class B: 128.0.0.0 - 191.255.255.255 => 16-bits - Net Id and 16-bits - Host Id.
- Class C: 192..0.0.0- 223.255.255.255 => 24-bits - Net Id and 8-bits - Host Id.
- Class D: 224.0.0.0 - 239.255.255.255 => 32-bits multicast Id.
- Class E 240.0.0.0 - 255.255.255.255 => Currently not in Use.
- 127.0.0.1 => Local Host Id or Loop back Interface means the address of same computer.
- IP Address 0s is used for Routers and 255s is used for Broadcast address.

- Special IP Addresses:
- The Limited Broadcast IP address: It is all 255s means 255.255.255.255. This IP is commonly used during system setup.
- The Network Directed Broadcast IP Address: Routers usually forward packets addressed to network-directed broadcast address. It looks like 203.255.255.255.
- The Zeros IP address: It is all 0s means 0.0.0.0. It is always seen in a system's log files. If You see the packets being sent from the Zeroes IP address, it means that an attacker is trying to fingerprint the target system.
